Colgate Edges Out Lafayette Teams

EASTON, Pennsylvania, January 20. DESPITE Junior Liz Geary and freshman Jonathan Jenkins turning in standout performances in the pool on Friday afternoon in Lafayette's dual meet with Colgate, the Raiders left Ruef Natatorium with a 161-137 win on the women's side and a 168-125 victory against the Leopard men.

Geary won the 100 breast in 1:08.80 and 200 back in 2:09.81 and swam on both relay teams. The 400 medley team (Geary, Barbara Pennington, Kristen Tyler and Katie Kaczka) won by more than five seconds in 4:01.89, and the 200 free relay team (Hilary White, Marcella Nehrbass, Kaczka and Geary) was outdone by just five-hundredths of a second as Colgate set a pool record in 1:38.03.

Jenkins was also a double winner for the Leopards, taking the 50 free by nearly a second (21.95) over teammate Ryder Pingry and the 100 free by more than two seconds in 47.71. He also led off for the winning 200 free relay team that included Pingry, Aaron Lampley and J.B. Worster and posted a time of 1:28.53.

"Our women's performances were better than we did against Binghamton just two days ago, and the men swam extremely well and gave Colgate all that they could handle," said head coach Jim Dailey. "We were focused on making it a great meet, and we did.

"I think this meet showed our women that even though they were tired from the winter training trip and the practices and meets since we've been back, that they can still win and succeed. The men have a lot of momentum now coming off a narrow loss against Stony Brook, followed by this narrow loss to Colgate."

Other winners for the Leopards were Tyler in the 100 and 200 fly, Jennifer Nunn in the 1000 free, White in the 50 free and Julie Sauer in the 100 back. White also placed second in the 200 and 500 free in addition to her contribution in the 200 free relay. Sauer's winning performance in the 100 back was followed by Shelby Grabowski and Michelle Oswald, who gave Lafayette the top three finishers in the event.

Brian Cronise and Kevin Oswalt both excelled in the men's diving events, with Cronise winning on the 1-meter board and Oswalt taking second. On the 3-meter board, Oswalt placed second and Cronise was third.

In the pool, Lampley won the men's 1000 free for Lafayette, while Steve Rubino won the 100 fly and was second in the 200. Worster competed in a total of four events, placing second in the 200 free in addition to his effort in the 200 free relay.

"Today's meet puts into perspective what we can accomplish at Patriot League championships," Dailey said. "We're close to being exactly where we need to be going into taper in a week and a half and their enthusiasm is growing. Both teams will perform to their potential next month."
