Cornell Men Hand 170-130 Loss to Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conneticut, January 14. THE Cornell men's swimming and diving team continued its unbeaten regular dual match season by clinching at least a share of the Ivy League's regular season round-robin title with a 170-130 victory at Yale on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red improved to 8-0 overall by also defeating Navy 213-87 in the three-team meet.

The Big Red captured first in 10 events on the afternoon. The team opened in style, finishing its teams 1-2 in the 200 medley relay with the squad comprised of Wes Newman, Dave McKechnie, Jackson Wang and Brad Gorter hitting the wall first in 1:31.04. Newman also captured the 1,000 free (9:21.63) and the 500 free (4:27.22) by more than seven seconds each. Mike Smit began his dominant streak with a win in the 200 free (1:39.09), while Kevin Carey (1:41.89) and Wang (1:42.10) placed third and fourth, respectively. Smit also took first in the 100 (49.40) and 200 fly (1:49.01), and anchored the 400 free relay that touched the wall first (3:00.62). Smit was joined by Wes Newman, Dave McKechnie and Brad Gorter.

Also capturing an individual win was McKechnie in the 100 breast (55.12, a full three seconds better than the runner-up), while freshman Nick Campbell's time of 1:53.82 in the 200 IM was also good enough for first thanks to an outstanding 24.65 lead leg. McKechnie also captured tje 200 breast in 2:01.56, three seconds ahead of runner-up and teammate Rich Bowen.

Other impressive performances came from Phil Baity (second, 49.88) in the 100 and 200 back (fourth, 1:50.13), Mike Balint (second, 20.70) to lead a 2-3-4-5 Cornell sweep in the 50 free, Brad Gorter (second, 45.84) and Colin Laren (third, 46.51) in the 100 free.

Cornell returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. at Teagle Pool when it will compete against Central New York rival Colgate.
