New Zealand World Championships Trials Continues Through Second Day

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, December 13. IN the second day of competition at the New Zealand World Championships Trials held in Auckland, local swimmer Mark Herring broke the 50 free national record during semis with a time of 23.19. Here is the rest of the night's action.

Men's 100 Backstroke Finals
North Shore continued its dominant meet with another 1-2 finish in the men's 100 back. Cameron Gibson touched first in 56.65, while John Zulch claimed second in 58.39. 16-year-old Kurt Bassett rounded out the top three in 58.41.

Women's 50 Butterfly Finals
Just three weeks after emigrating from Zimbabwe to New Zealand, 17-year-old Samantha Richter took home the national title in the sprint fly with a 28.68 clocking. 15-year-old Grace Marriner-Duncan placed second in 28.85, while Emma Banks of North Shore took third in 29.08.

Women's 50 Breaststroke Finals
Former world record holder Zoe Baker qualified for World Championships by taking the sprint breast event in 31.48. 17-year-old Annabelle Carey of AquaGym earned silver in 32.72, while West Auckland Aquatics' Sarah Vettoretti placed third in 33.50.

Men's 100 Butterfly Finals
North Shore's Moss Burmester led his team's top-two sweep as the Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in the event won with a 53.62 clocking. Teammate Corney Swanepoel finished second in 54.49, while Primo Sundevils' Matt Thomas finished third in 55.78.

Women's 100 Backstroke Finals
North Shore cleaned house in the women's 100 back. Elizabeth Coster (1:02.05) upset Hannah McLean (1:02.35), while Melissa Ingram rounded out the top three in 1:03.60.

Women's 800 Freestyle Finals
Kiwi West Aquatics 16-year-old Cara Baker shattered her own national age group record by more than six seconds with a winning time of 8:51.70. Spirit of the Southland's Joyce Wiegersma placed second in 9:05.48, while Capital Swim's Kirsten Cameron completed the top three in 9:13.47.

Men's 50 Breaststroke Semi-Finals
North Shore's Glenn Snyders beat his teammate Oliver Young in the sprint breast semi-final by recording a 29.19 against Young's 29.94. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Amini Fonua clocked the third-best time of 30.28.

Women's 100 Freestyle Semi-Finals
North Shore snared another 1-2-3 as Alison Fitch touch in 56.99, while Helen Norfolk placed second in 58.15. Calle Durham came in with the third-quickest time of 58.27.

Men's 50 Freestyle Semi-Finals
West Auckland Aquatics' Mark Herring posted the fastest time of the semi-final round with a 23.19 to beat out Laser Mt. Eden Swimming 16-year-old Orinoco Faamausili-Banse's time of 23.29. North Shore's William Benson finished third in 23.55.

Notably, Herring's time broke his brother Brad's previous national record.
