Miami Closes Out First Day of Hosting Miami Invite

OXFORD, Ohio, November 30. ON the first day of the 13th Annual Miami Invitational, the Miami University men's swimming and diving team placed two swimmers in the final of the 1,650 freestyle and posted a top-eight relay finish as it scored 75 team points. Miami stands seventh after day one, while Denison is in first place with 171 points.

In men's action, Miami was led by sophomore Scott DuCharme, as he finished the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:42.83. DuCharme earned 15th place and tacked 14 points on the board for Miami.

Sophomore Jason Bank added another 11 points in his 18th-place finish behind DuCharme in the 1,650 freestyle. Bank clocked in at 16:51.53.

After finishing seventh in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 6:57.15, Miami is seventh out of eight teams going into the second day of competition.

For the women, Miami placed two swimmers in the final of the 1,650 freestyle as it scored 43 team points. Miami stands ninth after day one, while Oakland University is in first place with 139 points.

The RedHawks got off to a rough start after being disqualified for an early take-off during the 800 yard free relay.

Miami fought back to earn 43 points in the 1,650 freestyle, leaving the RedHawks ninth after the first day of competition.

Sophomore Jennifer Flaherty led Miami in the 1,650 freestyle with a third-place finish, touching in at 17:13.65, the best time by a RedHawk this season. Senior Laura-Ashley Lossing helped put points on the Miami scoreboard as well with her 19th-place time of 18:13.05.

The RedHawks resume action in the Miami Invitational Friday morning with the preliminary heats at 9 a.m. The events scheduled for the second day of competition are as follows: 200 freestyle relay, 200 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 400 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1- and 3-meter diving and 400 medley relay.
