West Virgina Men and Women in First at Terp Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md., November 17. THE West Virginia University swimming and diving team blew the competition out of the water on the second day of the Terrapin Cup Invitational on Friday, Nov. 17, at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md. The men led with a score of 505 points while the women joined them at 279.5 points.

The women collected four first place victories and set four new school records while the men won five events and set three new school records. At the end of the day, the women led the field with 279.5 points, a full 100.5 points ahead of second place University of Kansas, while the men led their field with 504 points, 95 points ahead of North Carolina State.

The women got the night started by establishing a new school record in the 200 medley relay. Freshmen Morgan Callaway, Kitti Veisz, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews won the event with a time of 1:42.08, shaving 1.62 seconds off the old school record set on Nov. 4 at the Marshall quad-header.

The men followed with their own victory in the 200 medley relay. Senior Kyle Williams, junior Nick Delic, sophomore Andrew Langenfeld and freshman Zoltan Povazsai won the event in 1:30.29.

Sophomore Michael Walker extended his individual success in to the second day of the meet, placing second in the 400 IM with a time of 3:55.13.

The Mountaineers earned key points in the 100 fly. Shupe won the event for the women with a time of 56.02. Langenfeld won the event on the men's side with a time of 47.80, breaking his own school record of 47.82. Junior Pablo Marmolejo followed Langenfeld with a second place finish of 49.25.

Povazsai saw individual success for the second consecutive night, winning the 200 free with a time of 1:36.58, a new school record.

Veisz extended her dominance in the 100 breast, winning the event in 1:02.12. In the process, the Budapest, Hungary, native broke her own school record of 1:03.10, set Oct. 28 against Louisville.

Delic took the 100 breast, breaking his own school record as well. His winning time of 53.17 was .65 seconds quicker than the previous record.

Callaway was the fourth Mountaineer to break her own school record when she finished second in the 100 back with a time of 56.14. Walker placed third for the men with a time of 50.56.

WVU finished the night with two more victories. The women set a new school record with their win in the 800 free relay. Junior Maritza Paredes and freshmen Stephanie Roop, Shaunna Purtell and Callaway comprised for the record setting time of 7:29.64.

The men again followed with their own victory in the 800 free relay. Juniors Delic and Eduardo Ramirez, sophomore Tony Cisneros and Povazsai won the event in 6:41.07.

The Mountaineers look to maintain their strong lead when the invitational comes to a close on Saturday, Nov. 18. Preliminaries are set to begin at 10 a.m.
