Miami Defeats Ball State, 170.5-123.5 -- November 3, 2006

OXFORD, Ohio, November 3. SOPHOMORE Chris Heaton reset his own varsity 3-meter diving record and the Miami University men's swimming and diving team won 11 of 16 events as it opened the 2006-07 season with a 170.5-123.5 Mid-American Conference dual meet win over the Ball State Cardinals.

On Friday afternoon at the Nixon Aquatic Center, Heaton bested his own school record on the 3-meter board with a first-place score of 344.85. Heaton's previous school-record score was 342.60, which he set last season (Jan. 27, 2006) at the Eastern Michigan dual meet. Heaton also notched the top score on the 1-meter board (307.87) but did not compete for team points in the event.

In addition to Heaton's strong performance, Miami's freshman class earned top billing as four different first-year swimmers combined for five top finishes. Matthew Grubb paced the freshmen class with first-place showings in the 100 backstroke (54.03) and 200 backstroke (1:57.30), while classmates Michael Carroll, David Brown and Mike Whipkey added first-place times in the 100 butterfly (54.15), 100 freestyle (48.06) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.12), respectively.

Three other Miamians turned in top swimming finishes, led by senior Andy Amyot's first-place time in the 100 breaststroke (59.80). Junior Ryan McHugh and sophomore Nick DuPuis also swam top times in the 50 freestyle (21.42) and 500 freestyle (4:47.88), respectively. Miami additionally won both relay events, placing first in the 200 medley relay (1:35.51) and 400 freestyle relay (3:14.59).
