Richmond Spins Web Around N.C. State, 154-145

RICHMOND, Virginia, October 27. THE Richmond Spiders moved their season mark to 2-1 with a 154-145 win over the N.C. State Wolfpack Friday night at the Robins Center Natatorium in Richmond. The Spiders used a come-from-behind effort thanks to sweeps in both the 100 back and 200 breast.

"The one thing to say about tonight was just one great team effort," head coach Matt Barany said. "As coaches we challenged each of our swimmers to be wild and tonight each and every one on the team was wild."

The Spiders opened the meet by picking up the first of their nine event wins on the night. Sophomore Lauren Beaudreau, junior Anastasia Lau, freshman Katie Sieben and sophomore C.J. Pisano turned in a 1:46.72 in the 200 medley relay. The winning time was just .30 seconds off the fastest 200 medley time the Spiders swam all of the 2005-06 season.

Senior Caitlin Geary, who took part in the final home meet of her career, touched out a win in the 1000 free by .50 seconds with a mark of 10:15.36.

Beaudreau and freshmen Alex Helland and Beth Ann Platt swept the 100 back with marks of 58.33, 58.82 and 59.82, respectively.

Lau along with senior Alicia Crossman, who also was swimming the final home meet of her career, went 1-2 in the 100 breast. Lau turned in a 1:06.09 and Crossman finished with a 1:07.45.

"We delegated responsibility and spread it all out evenly," Barany added. "I think we knew if we could win we would be doing it together as a team. The team understood that and we did it."

Pisano and Sieben again helped add points to the Spiders' total with a first and second-place finish in the 50 free. Pisano logged a 24.78, while Sieben finished with a 24.80.

Richmond was able to pull even with the Wolfpack following a first-place finish in the 200 back by junior Jessica Witt. The Fullerton, Calif., native went 2:06.10 to earn nine points and knot the score at 103-103.

The Spiders then turned in their second sweep of the evening pulling away from the Wolfpack for good with the 200 breast. Beaudreau (2:19.67), Lau (2:24.35) and Crossman (2:24.44) took home a combined 16 points in the event, upping the team scores to 119-106.

Sieben tacked on another win in the 100 fly with the fifth-fastest time in school history, 57.99. Witt then put the finishing touches on the win with a 4:26.11 in the 400 IM.
