Washington State Smashes CSUN, 151-50

PULLMAN, Washington, October 21. THE Washington State swim team moved to an undefeated 3-0 record with a 151-50 victory Saturday over the Cal State Northridge Matadors at WSU's Gibb Pool. Bryn Mooney, Michaela Ahlin and Erin McCleave each turned in 18 points for the Cougars.

"I thought that we swam pretty well coming off a competition," said Head Coach Erica Quam. "I think some people were focusing a little bit more on feel and time but they still did a good job of getting up and racing. That's going to help us when we have tougher meets back to back."

Washington State took first place in all 11 events and swept the top three spots in five individual events to earn their third straight win of the 2006-07 season. Senior Erin McCleave came in first in both the 200 IM (2:08.78) and the 500 freestyle (4:58.31). Freshman Michaela Ahlin turned in two more victories for the Cougars for a total of four individual wins on the weekend. Ahlin took the top spot in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.36 and came in first in the 200 freestyle (1:55.50). Junior Bryn Mooney came in first in the 50 freestyle (24.98) and turned in a career best time of 58.97 in the 100 backstroke to take first place.

"Bryn had never been under 59 [seconds] in the 100 backstroke so that was great to see and she's gotten a couple of technical improvements in her backstroke that have really helped her," said Quam. "Michaela did a great job in the 200 freestyle and feels strong in that event."

Junior Lina Daugvilaite turned in a 1000 freestyle time of 10:33.63 taking first place in the event. Her time of 1:58.57 in the 200 freestyle was good enough for second place. Freshman Shawna Keller earned her second win of the weekend with a first place finish in the 100 freestyle (53.34). Monika Povilonyte, a senior out of Lithuania, swam to first place with a final time of 1:05.83. Elyse Peterson turned in seven points for the Cougars with a second place finish in the 50 freestyle (25.09) and took third in the 100 freestyle (56.16).

WSU also came in first place in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

For the Matadors, Shannon Colavito was the top scorer as she came in second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 1000 freestyle. Sanda Jukic swam to second place in the 100 freestyle.
