UMBC Downs Rider, 135.5-97.5 Women/138-84 Men

BALTIMORE, Maryland, October 21. THE UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the season with wins over Rider Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever men (1-0) defeated the Broncs, 138-84, while the women (1-0) were victorious by a score of 135.5-97.5. Both Rider teams fall to 0-1.

The UMBC women took 11 of 13 events, with junior Meghan Sackett, sophomore Daniele Surkovich and seniors Agnes Stanislawska and Ashley Houghton each winning twice. Sackett won both the 200-free (1:55.99) and the 500-free (5:05.36), while Surkovich took the 50-free (24.09) and 100-free (52.44). Stanislawska won the 200-IM (2:07.98) and the 200-back (2:06.78), while Houghton swept the diving events with scores of 233.31 on the 1-meter board and 211.95 on the 3-meter.

UMBC took the top three spots in the 200-breast, with sophomore Tina Cantwell winning the event (2:19.90), followed by freshman Tereza Kaplanova and sophomore Joy Wilde.

The Retriever women also swept the relays, with Stanislawska, Cantwell, freshman Kate Chialastri and junior Lindsey Engler winning the 400-medley relay in 3:58.97 and Engler, freshman Lindsay Sherman, Sackett and Surkovich taking the 400-free relay in 3:40.79.

Courtney Clark took the 1,000-free and Lauren Urbanski won the 200-fly for Rider's only victories on the day.

In a rematch of one of last season's losses, the UMBC men took 11 of 13 events, and were led by sophomores Justin Bronson and Evan Roseberry, who won two individual events apiece. Bronson took the 100-free (47.18) and 200-free (1:42.47), while Roseberry took both the 200-fly (1:57.75) and the 500-free (4:43.98).

Other winners for the Retrievers included senior Ryan Karrer in the 1,000-free (9:39.18); senior Juan Ortiz in the 200-IM (1:58.63); sophomore Milos Djukic in the 200-back (1:54.88); senior Jeff Salgado in the 3-meter dive (282.00); and junior Scott Auchter in the 200-breast (2:12.80).

UMBC took the top three spots in five events. Sophomore Freddie Retiz and freshman John Seniz touched in after Bronson in the 200-free; junior Adam Eiben and senior Brian Jaeggi followed Ortiz in the 200-IM; sophomore Josh Nachman and junior Eric Skrabacz took second and third in the 200-fly behind Roseberry; freshman Rasmus Kutt and Jaeggi followed Djukic in the 200-back; and Reitz and senior Pat Woodward touched in after Auchter in the 200-breast.

The Retriever men also swept the relays, with Kutt, Auchter, Skrabacz and Ortiz taking the 400-medley relay in 3:32.36 and Bronson, freshman Matt Mattingly, senior Tim Conway and Ortiz winning the 400-free relay in 3:12.66.

Cleveland Brown won the 50-free and Dylan Korn took the 1-meter dive for the Broncs' only victories of the meet.
