Rubenstein Wins One-Meter at USA Diving National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 2 ASHLEY Rubenstein won the women's one-meter title Wednesday at the 2006 Kaiser Permanente National Diving Championships.

Rubenstein scored 278.75 points to win her first national championship, while 2005 national champion Kelci Bryant took second with 273.30 points. Amanda Miller scored 265.15 points for bronze, and Bianca Alvarez, who won the girls 16-18 junior national one-meter title last week, was fourth at 261.95.

"I competed pretty well all day," Rubenstein said. "The one-meter format is back-to-back prelim, semifinals and finals and this format really worked for me. I just kept getting better with every list that I performed. It came down to my final dive in the finals. After Kelci performed a gorgeous final dive right before me the pressure was on. I had to do that final dive better than I had ever done it before and that is exactly what I did. I am very excited for myself and for my coach, Jeff Shaffer, we both have worked very hard all summer and this is an excellent way to conclude the year."

Troy Dumais, the 2006 World Cup bronze medalist on 3-meter, scored 439.85 points to place first in the men's three-meter semifinals. Justin Wilcock placed second with 422.55 points, and Mitch Richeson finished third at 409.90 points. The top 12 divers in the semifinals advance to Friday's finals.

Indiana University’s Cassandra Cardinell finished first with 338.55 points in the women's platform semifinals to lead the field of 12 divers advancing to Friday's finals. Jessica Livingston snared second with 305.10 points, and Taryn Ignacio finished third with 283.75 points. Defending champion and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Laura Wilkinson did not compete because of a back injury.
