Hausding Tops Johnstone in Platform Event at European Junior Diving

MALLORCA, Spain, July 6. CALLUM Johnstone showed he's undoubtedly Britain's top diver at the moment when he collected his second European Junior Championship medal on the competition's final day in Mallorca. The 15-year-old City of Leeds diver rounded out an impressive five-day meet in Palma de Mallorca with silver in the Boys A Platform event to add to the bronze he collected with partner Charles Calvert (City of Leeds) in the three-meter Synchro three days earlier.

Johnstone had been earmarked going into competition as the British diver to watch and he fulfilled that expectation with a string of impressive performances. Throughout the Platform event Johnstone looked in control and competed impeccably until he badly missed a dive and then struggled with the next. However, he held his nerve despite the setback to take the silver. Gold went to Germany's Patrick Hausding with a score of 528.35 while Johnstone finished at 492.20 and bronze went to Christofer Eskilsson of Sweden at 479.55.

"Overall I'm pretty happy with that although there were a couple of the dives that disappointed," said Johnstone. "I still have two more years in that age group so there's time to improve and find that top step of the podium. I started to feel the pressure a bit when I dropped the third dive so I just tried to shut everything out to concentrate on the job I was there to do."
