Texas A&M Grand Prix Sprinkled with Several Stars -- June 21, 2006

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, June 21. WHILE numerous Olympians will be gathering in California this weekend for the Santa Clara International Swim Meet, the United States Grand Prix Series will also feature an event at Texas A&M. Although the A&M Grand Prix doesn’t boast as strong or deep a field as Santa Clara, a number of elite athletes will be in attendance.

Headlining the meet in Texas will be Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry, the former Auburn standout who walked away from last year’s World Championships in Montreal with gold in the 100 and 200 backstroke events and silver in the 200 and 400 individual medley events. Also expected to race are Aaron Peirsol, the world-record holder in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, and Ian Crocker, the only man in history to crack the 51-second barrier in the 100 butterfly.

Aside from Peirsol and Crocker, several other standouts from Longhorn Aquatics will race, including Neil Walker, Garrett Weber-Gale and Michael Klueh. Switzerland’s Flavia Rigamonti, who won silver at the World Champs in the 1,500 freestyle, will also be in action.
