Tom Michaël Named New Diving Coach at Wisconsin
-- May 17, 2006
MADISON, Wisconsin. May, 16. TOM Michaël, head diving coach at Northwestern for the past six years, has joined the University of Wisconsin in a similar role, head coach Eric Hansen announced Monday.
"Tom brings a great deal of experience and proven success to our program," Hansen said. "His vision of the future of our diving program parallels that of what we have done in our swimming program."
Michaël is anxious to come to Madison and begin his duties, which officially commence on July 1. "I look forward to the opportunity to work at the University of Wisconsin and to bring the diving program into the national spotlight," he said.
During Michaël's tenure with the Wildcats, he coached several Big Ten Championship finalists and NCAA Zone Diving qualifiers, including 2006 3-meter diving champion and honorable mention All-American Chelsea Davis.
Davis represented the United States at the 12th FINA Diving Grand Prix last April in Zhuhai City, China, where she placed sixth on the 3-meter board in a field of 26 divers.
In addition to his duties at Northwestern, Michaël also serves as the head diving coach for the North Shore Sharks, a Junior Olympic diving program in Evanston, Ill. Prior to his current positions, Michaël was a two-time Mid-American Conference diving coach of the year at Eastern Michigan (1995-2000).
On the international level, Michaël's experience includes serving as the 2001 Team USA coach for the Junior Pan-American Championships in Mexico City and as the 2002 and 2003 Team USA coach for the USA vs. Canada, East/West All-Star Team.
A native of Erie, Mich., Michaël was a five-time MAC champion, three-time conference diver of the year and team captain his senior year at Eastern Michigan. From there, he went on to become a professional diver for nine years and was the World High Diving champion in 1994.
Michaël, whose full name is John Thomas Michaël, is married to wife Whitney and has two children, Christophe (four) and MacKenzie (three).
