Warnecke Undergoes Knee Surgery -- December 20, 1999

Berlin, Germany - Germany's Mark Warnecke, who retained his 50m breaststroke title at the European Short-Course Championships in Lisbon, underwent knee surgery on December 17.

Warnecke was hampered by a knee injury in Lisbon and trailed in the heats and semifinals, saving his big effort for the final which he won in 27.10, well outside his own world record of 26.70.

The 29-year-old, who plans to compete in his fourth Olympics next year in Sydney, will miss the World Cup meets in Shanghai and Hong Kong next month.
