Men's NCAA Div I. Championships, Finals: Auburn Wins the 200 Free Relay in a Wild Race -- March 23, 2006

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Ga., March 23. STANFORD qualified first but the Cardinal was never really in contention this evening as Cal, the defending champion, Arizona, the second-fastest qualifier, and Auburn kept trading the lead.

Arizona’s Simon Burnett led off in 19.43 to give the Wildcats the lead, but Auburn’s Matt Targett moved the Tigers into the lead at the halfway point with his 18.67 split. Arizona regained the lead by .05 sec. at the 150, as Albert Subirats split 19.02.

At the wall, it was Auburn’s George Bovell who got to the wall first, splitting 18.72 to touch in 1:16.15. Arizona was second in 1:16.54, followed by Cal in 1:16.72. Stanford was fourth in 1:17.32.

UNLV won the consolation final in 1:19.47

There were six sub-19 second splits with Targett and Stanford’s Benjamin Wildman-Tobriner both splitting 18.67.
