AFOX Girls Dominate 1000 at Junior Nationals -- March 21, 2006

ORLANDO, Florida. March 21. WITH the completion of the 1000s and the 200 medley relays the 2006 NCSA Junior National Championships are well under way.

The women started things off in the 1,000 free with 17-year-old Alexandra Clarke from Arizona Desert Fox winning in 9:45.28, just one one-hundredth off the meet record set back in 1997. Second place went to AFOX teammate Joni Zimmerman with her 9:51.39 swim. Fourth place also went to an AFOX swimmer, Jaclyn Puschak in 9:53.01. Finally, 14-year-old Ashley Evans from AFOX rounded out their night with a 9:55.75. Four swimmers in the top eight is quite a start.

For the men's 1,000 it was 18-year-old Mark Neiman from the Jersey Wahoos who walked away with the victory. His 9:05.46 set a meet record as it dipped under the former standard of 9:05.89, set in 1993 by Andy Potts. He won the event by nearly eight seconds, as second place was William Dove from Raleigh Swimming with a 9:13.16.

The team from Lake Country won the women's 200 medley relay with its 1:43.43 swim by Katherine Eschenburg, Margaret Zblewski, Nicole Landisch, and Kylsie Grimes. Those names might sound familiar to those readers who have been following the high school state meets around the country. These girls have teamed up before and they usually equal success.

Tampa Bay Aquatics took the men's 200 medley relay led by Florida high school state champ Tommy Wyher with Corey Swanson, Levi Curnutte, and Ryan Stumpf in 1:33.87, a new meet record.
