Auburn Men and Georgia Woman Claim SEC Championship Team Titles

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., February 18. AUBURN won its 10th team crown going away on the men's side while Georgia held off the Tigers to take home its sixth women's title overall at the 2006 Southeastern Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the University of Tennessee Student Aquatic Center.

The Tigers ran away with the men's crown, tallying 1,101.5 points to give themselves a 162-point victory over Florida. Georgia finished third with 761 points, while host Tennessee ended the meet fourth. The last time Auburn was not the SEC champion was in 1996, the last conference meet held at the UT Student Aquatic Center. This will be the last major event at the 39-year-old facility, as the new Allan Jones Aquatic Center is scheduled for completion in December 2007.

"Every SEC Championship is different because the personalities of the teams are different," said Auburn head coach David Marsh. "The competition's different. The competition in the SEC is always fabulous. Swimming in the SEC is only going to get better, but for the moment, we're very proud to be number one."

The Tigers won three events on the evening, as Doug Van Wie grabbed the 200-yard backstroke victory (1:42.83) and Cesar Cielo touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle (43.00). The quartet of Cielo, Bryan Lundquist, Kurt Cady and Jakob Andkjaer clocked a 2:52.41 in the 400-yard freestyle to finish the meet.

Georgia's Sebastien Rouault took home his third title of the meet with a SEC-record 14:40.81 clocking in the 1,650 freestyle. Vlad Polyakov of Alabama swept the breaststroke events, snagging first in the 200 event in 1:54.16 on Saturday. Florida's Ryan Lochte continued his undefeated season, taking his third SEC title while breaking his second SEC record of the championship and seventh in his four-year career for the Gators with his 200 butterfly win in 1:42.39. Lochte, a 2004 Olympic gold and silver medalist, is the first swimmer in SEC history to hold seven separate conference records at the same time.

Georgia came out with a slim 1,094-1,075 victory over Auburn in the women's team race. Florida finished third with 758 points, while Kentucky rode a top-three sweep in the women's platform diving event to hold off host Tennessee for fourth place. The Bulldogs claimed their first title since 2001.

"This is the best SEC Championship meet we've ever had, and it's the sweetest one we've ever had," Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. "We've got such an exceptionally tough group of kids. They really gutted it out. I could not be more elated, and I am especially happy for our seniors."

The Lady Bulldogs won four of the six swimming events on Saturday. Alek Putra claimed the 200 backstroke win (1:55.56), while Kara Lynn Joyce was victorious in the 100 freestyle (47.67). Mary DeScenza ends her four-year stay at Georgia by never being defeated in the butterfly events at the league meet, taking tonight's 200 in 1:54.23. She is the first woman to accomplish this feat in league history. To cement the crown, DeScenza, Jessica Cole, Anna Miller and Joyce combined for a three-second win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Other champions from Saturday include Auburn's Hayley Peirsol, who claimed the title in the 1,650 freestyle for her first SEC Championship (15:53.90), and Florida's Vipa Bernhardt in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.04). In the women's platform diving, Kentucky's Taryn Ignacio, Jessica Thompson and Joey Brown went 1-2-3, as Ignacio amassed 282.80 points in the win.

Five athletes shared top point-scorer honors for the championships. The women's Commissioner's Cup was shared by the Lady Bulldogs' DeScenza and Joyce, while the men's trophy was a three-way tie between Florida's Lochte, Georgia's Rouault and Bulldog diver Chris Colwill.

During the four-day event, five SEC records fell on the men's side, while one women's mark fell. Every UT Student Aquatic Center women's mark was set during the meet, while only two standards out of the 18 events for the men survived the weekend.
