Stanford Men and Women Sweep British Columbia -- November 18, 1999

STANFORD, CA - Stanford won 13 of 14 races on the women's side and 11 of 14 on the men's side to defeat the University of British Columbia in a pair of dual meets at deGuerre Pool Friday afternoon (November 12). The Cardinal women, ranked third nationally, posted a 170.5-78-5 win while the top-ranked men beat the Thunderbirds 175-87. British Columbia is the defending CIAU national champions in both men's and women's swimming.

For the women, junior Shelly Ripple (Baton Rouge, LA/Parkview Baptist) won the 100 and 200 backstrokes and 200 IM, while junior Siobhan Cropper (Trinidad, West Indies/St. Joseph's Convent) won the 50 and 100 freestyles and 100 butterfly. Double winners were senior Gabrielle Rose (Memphis, TN/St. Mary's Episcopal) in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, junior Misty Hyman (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain) in the 200 free and 200 fly, and sophomore Jessica Foschi (Old Brookville, NY/Friends Academy) in the 500 and 1000 free.

For the Cardinal men, junior Adam Messner (Ann Arbor, MI/Dexter) won the 200 and 1000 free and 100 fly. Junior Rob Canales (San Jose, CA/Bellarmine Prep) captured the 100 and 200 breast, and freshman Randall Bal (Fair Oaks, CA/Bella Vista) won the 50 free and 200 back.
