Baumann Recovering From Cancer -- November 8, 1999

Alex Baumann, 35, executive director of Queensland Swimming, is recovering from four operations for testicular cancer. Baumann, a Canadian Olympian who set world records in winning both individual medley events at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, told Swimming World that recent follow-up exams show that "everything is clear and the prognosis is very good."

According to Attila Mady, M.D., a former teammate of Baumann's, "testicular cancer has a 98% cure rate if it is caught early enough." Baumann lives in Brisbane, Australia, with his wife, Tracy, and two children, Ashton, 6, and Tabitha, 4.
