Ann Arbor Pioneer Girls Smash Relay Record

By Emily Mason

YPSILANTI, Michigan, November 22. THE girls from Ana Arbor Pioneer were at it again and this year they nearly set two new high school records at the Michigan State Championships. First, in the 400 free relay, Leigh Cole, Liz Koselka, Kristyne Cole and Margaret Kelly swam away with a 3:23.85, better than the 3:24.08 of Bolles (1996). They nearly earned a second record when they clocked in at a 1:42.78 in the 200 medley just short of Arrowhead's record of 1:42.71, produced earlier this month.

The relays weren't the only fast swims at the meet. On the Division I side, Ava Ohlgren won the 200 IM in a 1:59.23 and the 500 free, 4:50.87. Speedy Margaret Kelly blasted away to the fastest 100 fly this year for high schoolers with her 53.98 and she also managed a 55.46 for another win in the 100 back. Kristyne Cole won the 200 free with a 1:49.88, Lisa Butler took the 50 free in a 23.84, Leigh Cole won the 100 free with a 51.07 and Carlye Ellis swam to victory in the 100 breast with a 1:02.82.

In the Division II sector there were some equally fast times in the individual events. Adrienne Woods won the 200 and 100 free with a 1:49.98 and 51.00. Katya Bachrouche took the 200 IM in 2:04.91 and the 500 free in 4:58.42. Dana Christ splashed to a 54.46 100 fly and 56.25 100 back. And Katherine White took the 50 free with a 24.04 and Emily Schlatter won the 100 breast with a 1:04.18.
