Flash! Dave Denniston Takes First Steps!

By Phillip Whitten

November 17. FORMER Auburn captain and NCAA champion Dave Denniston, paralyzed from the waist down in a sledding accident in Wyoming last February, took a giant step forward in his rehabilitation yesterday. Actually, it was 76 giant steps.

Appearing at a benefit for Project Walk in Carlsbad, California, where he is undergoing rehabilitation, Dave took 76 steps with the aid of a walker. A typical swimmer, he noted: “It took me six-and-a-half minutes.” No doubt when he makes it to 100 steps, he’ll establish a “record,” then try to beat it each time he walks.

It was less than a month ago that Dave took his first, very tentative step (using a walker) and it was sideways. So, buoyed by the support and love of his family, friends, coaches, teammates and thousands of supporters, he has made absolutely phenomenal progress.
