Eric Hansen and Mike DeBoor to Head U.S. Squads at World Short Course Championships -- November 4, 2005
MADISON, Wisconsin, November 3. WISCONSIN head swimming Coach Eric Hansen and Lakeside head coach Mike Deboor were recently appointed the head men's and women’s coaches for the United States National Team at the upcoming World Short Course Swimming Championships. The event will be held April 5-9 in Shanghai, China.
The selection marks the third time in four years Hansen has been named head coach of a U.S. National Team. In 2002, he led the Men's Short Course World Championship team in Moscow to five gold medals and two world records. Most recently, Hansen guided the U.S. National Team at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to eight gold medals.
This is Mike DeBoor’s first position as a head coach for the U.S. National team. Mike was selected to coach the 2005 National Junior Team, the 2005 Regional Distance Camp, the 2002 and 2004 FINA USA World Cup Team, the 1995 USA Olympic Development Camp, the 1995 USA Swimming Girls Select Camp and as Head Coach of the 2003 USA Swimming Boys Select Camp. He is currently the Senior Vice Chairman of Kentucky Swimming and has served as the Head Coach on four Kentucky All-Star Teams and coached three Kentucky Zone Teams.
Hansen, a member of the U.S. National Team from 1987-92, is in his seventh year as Wisconsin's head coach. Hansen has led the women's program to six Top 20 finishes at the NCAA championships and has revitalized the men's program, taking it from 33rd in the nation to five consecutive Top 20 finishes. Hansen mentored 2004 Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Carly Piper and 2004 Olympian Adam Mania, and led both Piper and Tim Liebhold to national championships this past year.
DeBoor is in his eighteenth year at Lakeside, twelfth as head coach. He has been named the Kentucky Swimming Senior Coach of the Year six times and twice named the ASCA Age Group Coach of the Year. He has placed swimmers on eight different USA National Teams and coached swimmers attending the 2005 World Championships, 2006 National Junior Team, 2004 Olympics, 1996 Olympics, Pan American Championships, Pan Pacific Championships, European Championships, South American Championships, Short Course World Championships and Long Course World Championships.
