World Championships: Nicolo Martinenghi Sets The Pace In The 50 Breaststroke Ahead Of Michael Andrew & Joao Gomes Jnr

Nicolo Martinenghi returned from claiming his first world title in the 100br to lead the way in the 50 breaststroke heats in Budapest.

The Italian set a national record of 58.26 en-route to the 100 title and he stopped the clock at 26.68 in the final heat of the one-length race to lead the qualifiers into Monday evening’s semis at the Duna Arena.

Also through were Michael Andrew (26.71), Joao Gomes Jnr (26.75) and Nic Fink (26.85).

There’ll be a new champion for the first time since 2013 when Cameron van der Burgh triumphed in Barcelona.

Adam Peaty won the titles in 2015, 17 and 19 but was ruled out after breaking his foot in training last month, scuppering his tilt at making history as the first man to win four successive doubles in the 50 and 100br.

Fink, who won bronze in the 100 on Sunday evening, went in heat five, stopping the clock at 26.85 with teammate Andrew leading the way in 26.71 in the following heat.

Martinenghi and Gomes Jnr went in the seventh and final heat, the pair alongside each other.
