World Championships Day One Women’s Semifinals: Canadian Olympic Champion Maggie Mac Neil Chasing Short Course Gold

Canadian Olympic champion Maggie Mac Neil will lead the qualifiers into the 50m butterfly final after a sizzling second semi-final win on the opening night of the Fina World Short Course Championships at the Melbourne Sports And Aquatic Centre.

The 22-year-old will be chasing a fifth World SC gold after leaving Abu Dhabi in 2021 with a real golden glow – winning four gold medals.

But not in the 50m butterfly which will see Mac Neil, the Olympic 100m butterfly gold medallist up against the 200m butterfly winner from Tokyo in China’s Zhang Yufei – who qualified second in 24.79 and third fastest qualifier – reigning world 100m butterfly champion, American Tori Huske.

The bronze medallist from Abu Dhabi and American record holder Claire Curzan finds herself in seventh place in 24.96.

Mollie O’Callaghan leads the way in the women’s 100 back in 55.80 with Ingrid Wilm of Canada in lane five in 55.92.

Claire Curzan and Louise Hansson both clocked 56.08 as next quickest with Kira Toussaint claiming the eighth and final spot.
