TYR Pro Series: Shaine Casas Blasts Quick Effort in 100 Butterfly; DQ Erases Stellar Effort From Leon Marchand

TYR Pro Series: Shaine Casas Blasts Impressive Effort in 100 Butterfly; Michael Andrew Goes 59-Low in 100 Breast

He might be best known for his skill set in the backstroke events, but Shaine Casas used the second day of the TYR Pro Series stop in San Antonio to remind the world he is a multi-event talent.

After qualifying as the top seed during the morning preliminaries, Casas pressed the pace early in the final and walked away from the Northside Swim Center with a victory in the 100-meter butterfly. Casas delivered a time of 51.09 to defeat Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel (51.79) and Coleman Stewart (51.93), who also cracked the 52-second barrier. Casas split 23.75 for the opening 50 meters, which supplied a cushion that was too much for the field to overtake.

Now training at the University of Texas, Casas’ performance bodes well for the weekend ahead, as he is slated to contest the 100 backstroke on Friday. Casas figures to be a leading contender for a World Championships berth when USA Swimming holds its International Team Trials in late April in Greensboro.

The 400 individual medley produced an anticlimactic result when Arizona State star freshman Leon Marchand was disqualified after initially appearing to win the event with the No. 1 time in the world. Marchand seemed to clock 4:10.38 for a dominant win over Jay Litherland (4:19.63), but the 19-year-old had his triumph taken away due to a turn violation.

Despite the DQ, Marchand put on a show that made it obvious the Frenchman will be a factor for the podium in several events at this summer’s World Championships in Budapest. Marchand will see additional action in San Antonio during the weekend.

Make it two 100 breaststroke wins in a row for Michael Andrew in Pro Series competition. Leading from the start, Andrew posted a time of 59.03 to lead three athletes under the minute mark. In his post-race interview, Andrew indicated he was looking for a mark in the 58-high range. Andrew went out in 27.44 to build an early edge, and while Nic Fink came back on Andrew during the second lap, there wasn’t enough room to move ahead. Fink took second in 59.32, with Caspar Corbeau going 59.78 for third place.

Coming off an NCAA title in the 200-yard freestyle, Texas’ Drew Kibler made a smooth transition to the long-course pool and won his pet event easily, an effort of 1:47.61 getting the job done. A 2020 Olympian, Kibler was in command for the majority of the race and finished a little more than a second ahead of 18-year-old Michael Cotter, who checked in at 1:48.63.
