On the Cover

The mental side of training is often talked about, but it seems most coaches leave its implementation to their swimmers. A group of researchers at the College of Wooster spent time during their season teaching swimmers relaxation and visualization techniques that the athlete and coaches feel helped them to better performances. See article on page 8. As part of our look at special concerns of the high school coach, Skip Bird talks about hypnosis as a valuable mental tool in training. Bird works on helping his swimmers visualize and focus on their races and goals twice a week during the season. See article on page 13.
