Pac-12 Women’s Championships Day 3: Torri Huske Breaks Meet Record in 100 Butterfly; Claire Curzan DQd, but Wins 100 back in Sub-50

The 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Championships continued with the Day 3 finals on Thursday from Federal Way, Wash.

The finals session consisted of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, plus diving and the 400 medley relay.

Stanford got wins from Torri Huske, Taylor Ruck and Claire Curzan on Friday, with Curzan coming back from a DQ in the butterfly to win the backstroke in a stellar time.

The Cardinal continue to build their lead and are poised to claim another conference title.

Pac-12 Women’s 400 IM

Cal sophomore Leah Polonsky dropped seven seconds from prelims to win the 400 IM She touched the wall in 4:05.77.

UCLA sophomore Paige MacEachern claimed second in 4:06.17, followed y Stanford freshman Lucy Bell (4:06.28) and USC freshman Justina Kozan (4:09.33).

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Butterfly

Stanford sophomore Torri Huske broke 50 seconds and broke the meet record to win the 0100 butterfly. She touched the wall in 49.27, topping Louise Hansson’s mark of 4.34 in 2019.

Teammate Claire Curzan was right there as well and looked to have finished second, but she was disqualified.

Second went to Cal sophomore Mia Kragh (51.63), followed by Arizona’s Julia Heimstead (52.03).

It was a chance for another 1-2 performance but the DQ changed the event, though Stanford did score two more.

Pac-12 Women’s 200 Freestyle

Stanford completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 free to extend the lead in the team race.

Taylor Ruck dropped nearly a second from prelims to win the race in 1:43.04.

Freshman Kayla Wilson was second in 1:43.74, ahead of senior Morgan Tankersley (1:4.04. Sophomore Lillie Nordmann finished sixth (1:45.64), and Natalie Mannion was seventh (1:45.79), giving the Cardinal a stunning 134 points from that finals heat.

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Breaststroke

USC’s Kaitlyn Dobler won the 100 breaststroke, leading a 1-2 Trojan finish, as seeded.

Dobler, the defending NCAA champion in the event, touched the wall in 57.10.

Teammate Isabelle Odgers was second in 58.92, both dropping more than half a second form their prelims times.

UCLA’s Claire Grover held her third seed and finished in 59.37, just ahead of Stanford’s Allie Raab (50.57).

 

Pac-12 Women’s 100 Backstroke

Stanford’s Claire Curzan bounced back from her DQ in the butterfly to win the 100 backstroke in emphatic fashion. She touched the wall in 49.46 to break the meet record, previously held by Regan Smith (49.50).

Cal’s Isabelle Stadden took second in 50.79, ahead of Stanford senior Lucie Nordmann (51.91).

No one else was under 52.

Pac-12 Women’s 400 Medley Relay

Stanford dominated the 400 medley relay to continue to lead the Pac-12 meet.

The Cardinal finished in 3:25.79, nearly six seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Claire Curzan led off in another sub-50 backstroke at 49.76. Allie Raab followed with a 59.44 breaststroke split, followed by Torri Huske (49.74) in the butterfly and Taylor Ruck (46.85) in the freestyle anchor.

Cal’s Isabelle Stadden, Leah Polonsky, Mia Kragh and Emma Davidson took second in 3:31.10.

UCLA’s Sophia Kosturos, Eva Carlson, Gabby Dang and Claire Grover took third (3:35.32).

USC was disqualified.
