Once Again, Aaron Shackell and Alex Shackell Headline Action at Speedo Sectionals in Indy

The Saturday night session of the Speedo Sectionals in Indianapolis brought additional star turns for Alex Shackell and Aaron Shackell, Carmel Swim Club’s Olympic hopefuls for the Paris Games this summer. Competing at the Indiana University Natatorium, Alex Shackell won the 200 butterfly while Aaron Shackell managed a win in the 400 freestyle.

Coming off an impressive decision in the 200 freestyle from Friday night, Aaron Shackell opened his Saturday slate with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle. Shackell clocked a time of 3:48.92 to register a two-plus second win over Luke Whitlock (3:51.16). The event, which is fairly wide open on the American scene, offers Shackell another option for Olympic qualification.

Alex Shackell, who has already represented the United States at the World Championships, looked sharp in the 200 fly while managing a time of 2:07.13. Although Regan Smith will head into the Olympic Trials as the favorite in the 200 fly, Shackell has firmly established herself as a top contender for a Paris invitation in the event. Shackell went through the opening 100 meters in 59.75.

In other action on Saturday night, Lakeside’s Charlotte Crush won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.48, with her brother, Johnny Crush, taking first in the event on the men’s side in 55.57. In the women’s 400 freestyle, Carmel’s Kayla Han emerged on top, going 4:10.10. Katryna Teterevkova posted a mark of 1:07.51 for the win in the women’s 100 breaststroke. Greg Enoch, another Carmel standout, won the men’s 200 fly in 1:58.98.
