The men’s showdown between No. 19 South Carolina and No. 22 Duke did not disappoint. The meet went down to the last race, as Duke won 144-139.

The Duke women did not have nearly as stressful of a meet as their male teammates. The Blue Devils outscored the Gamecocks 187-113.

Duke got off to a fast start, winning both the women’s and men’s 200-yard medley relay. The women’s team of backstroker Mickayla Hinkle, breaststroker Leah Goldman, butterflier Isabella Paez and freestyler Maddie Hess posted a time of 1:41.47, winning by over half a second.

In the men’s event, Duke’s team of backstroker Kazuma Takabayashi, breaststroker Peter Kropp, butterflier David Armstrong and freestyler James Peek won by nearly three seconds. The team posted a time of 1:27.77.

South Carolina’s Nils Wich-Glasen led all swimmers with 27 individual points. Wich-Glasen won the 100-yard breaststroke (54.74), 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.88) and 200-yard individual medley (1:49.93). He was also on the Gamecocks’ second place 200-yard medley relay team.

Kersten Dirrane of South Carolina scored 22 points, leading all women. The sophomore won both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.15) and 200-yard individual medley (2:05.84). She also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.13.

The Duke men were led by Takabayashi and Peek, both of whom scored 18 points. Takabayashi won the 100-yard backstroke (49.05) and 100-yard butterfly (49.14), while Peek captured the 50-yard freestyle (20.14) and 100-yard freestyle (44.82) titles.

Hinkle led the charge for the Duke women, scoring 18 individual points. The freshman won the 100-yard backstroke (55.69) and 200-yard backstroke (2:01.20).

After a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard individual medley, the South Carolina men held a five point lead going into the day’s final race: the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Despite the Gamecocks’ efforts, Duke relay teams took the top two spots in the 400-yard race. The winning team of Armstrong, Dylan Payne, Michael Seaberg and Peek posted a time of 2:59.91 to win the meet for the Blue Devils.

The South Carolina women are back in action on Jan. 16 when they take on Vanderbilt. The men’s and women’s teams will then swim together on Jan. 22 in a quad meet.
