Pac-12 Women’s Championships Day 2 Prelims: Close 50 Free Sets Up Intriguing Final

The 2024 Pac-12 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued with the Day 2 prelims from Federal Way, Washington.

The Day 2 events are the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle.

Pac-12 Women’s 500 Freestyle

Arizona State senior Lindsay Looney swam to the top seed in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:38.85. Her time was near her seed time and she was about a second faster than the field.

Stanford junior Aurora Roghair claimed the second seed in 4:39.61, just ahead of Arizona State sophomore Deniz Ertan (4:39.96).

USC sophomore Claire Tuggle took the fourth seed in 4:40.72, followed by Cal grad students Mia Motekaitis (4:41.73) and Rachel Klinker (4:41.95), Stanford sophomore Natalie Mannion (4:42.57) and Cal freshman Kathryn Hazle (4:42.97).

Pac-12 Women’s 200 IM

Stanford freshman Caroline Bricker held off a tight field to claim the top seed in the 200 IM.

The top six in the field were all within eight tenths of a second apart during prelims, which should make for a fast and entertaining final.

Bricker finished in 1:55.14, just ahead of Cal junior Leah Polonsky (1:55.23).

Arizona State’s Ieva Maluka took the third seed in 1:55.53, followed by Stanford sophomore Lucy Bell (1:55.82) and the UCLA pair of Rosie Murphy (1:55.93) and Paige MacEachern (1:55.97).

USC freshman Minna Abraham (1:56.48) and Arizona State sophomore Charli Brown (1:57.72) rounded out the top eight finalists.

Pac-12 Women’s 50 Freestyle

Cal grad student Eloise Riley claimed the top seed in the 50 freestyle with a smooth 22.09, which was a tenth faster than her seed time.

Meanwhile, a pair of USC seniors will be looming on either side of her in the finals.

Ecuador Olympian Anicka Delgado took the second spot in 22.17, while Caroline Famous was just behind in 22.24.

Stanford junior Amy Tang took the fourth seed in 22.28, followed by Arizona State junior Erin Milligan (22.31), Cal senior Isabelle Stadden (22.33), UCLA senior Maya Wilson (22.37) and Cal junior Stephanie Akakabota (22.39).
