NCAA Division III Championships: TCNJ’s James McChesney Blasts 200 Free Record

No men’s swimmer at the NCAA Division III Championships had gone sub-1:36 in the 200 freestyle before. No Division III swimmer had ever broken 1:35.

James McChesney blew both of those truths out of the water Thursday night.

The TCNJ junior blasted a time of 1:34.75, a meet and NCAA record, to win the 200 free at the Greensboro Aquatic Club Thursday on the second night of the meet.

It wasn’t the first record to go down in the evening session, nor even the most intriguing one. A recap:

Men’s 400 individual medley

Bryan Fitzgerald qualified sixth from prelims, and it mattered not one little bit in finals. The Kenyon senior, who’d entered with the top seed, was more than five seconds quicker at night than in the morning to win in 3:49.58. He was nearly two seconds clear of Washington University’s Daniel Sibley, who went 3:51.20.

Third went to Emory’s Benjamin Thorsen in 3:52.07, followed .02 seconds back by teammate Ryan Gibbons. The top seed from prelims, Pomona-Pitzer’s Larry Yu, slipped all the way to eighth, seven seconds slower.

Women’s 100 butterfly

Freshman Lily Klinginsmith’s NCAA career is off to a flying start, the Tufts rookie going 53.65 to lead the field. Second was Pomona-Pitzer’s Alex Turvey in 54.22, just .03 up on Denison’s Emma Pritchett. Denison added three consolations finalists to put some space between Emory, which finished fifth and sixth thanks to Caroline Maki and Taylor Leone.

Men’s 100 butterfly

Jesse Ssengonzi picked up in prelims where he left off in the final last year. Marko Krtinic didn’t get the memo, though.

Ssengonzi, the reigning NCAA champ, set a meet record in the morning by going 46.47, three tenths quicker than the time the University of Chicago swimmer used to win last year’s title. But Kenyon’s Krtinic spiled the party in finals by going 46.51 to win the final.

Krtinic’s time sets the meet record. The NCAA record, set in 2021 by Kenyon’s David Fitch at 46.46, prevails. Krtinic was fifth in prelims. Ssengonzi was went 46.68 at night.

Beyond that drama, Whitman’s Tanner Fillion added a bronze medal. Liam McDonnell of John Carroll finished fourth, also cracking 47 seconds.

It’s been a big night for the freshmen on the women’s side, with Kaley McIntyre adding her second title of the meet. The NYU rookie went 1:47.44, pulling away from the field by 1.36 seconds to augment her gold in the 50 free. She was a second quicker than the winning time last year by Tufts’ Claire Brennan, who finished sixth.

Second went to Denison’s Taryn Wisner, her second silver of the meet, in 1:48.80. She led three Big Red swimmers in the A final, with Tara Culibrk third and Anna Pfeufer seventh, consolidating their lead in the team race.

Men’s 200 freestyle

James McChesney made history and left everyone else behind. The TCNJ junior was the second seed in the morning at 1:37.15, then blasted the field with a 1:34.74.

It’s quicker than the meet record, set by last year’s winner Jamie Lovette of Williams at 1:36.00. Lovette also set the Division III mark at conference champs last year with a 1:35.52, a team that McChesney nearly hacked a second out of.

Amazingly, he was second after 150 yards. But he uncorked his second-fastest 50 of the race at 24.10 coming home to pass Emory’s Pat Pema. Pema took silver in 1:36.09, and teammate Nick Goudie was fourth. Washington’s Mason Kelber, who had set the pace in prelims, finished third in 1:37.06. The points allowed Emory to leapfrog into first place, one point ahead of Kenyon.

In the microcosm battle of the team competition, Kenyon scored a big victory on the boards. Israel Zavaleta defended his championship and added the NCAA record with an outstanding score of 602.00. He was 79.5 points clear of the runner-up, Emory’s Lucas Bumgarner. Zavaleta won the event last year in 576.40. The junior downed the NCAA record set in 2014 by Denison’s Connor Dignan at 578.70. Zavaleta’s score is one that looks like it could stay for quite some time.

Kenyon hopped back into the lead, aided by Mason Fishell in eighth. Jud Kyle of Carnegie Mellon scored 497.20 to finish third.

Women’s 400 medley relay

Kenyon gains a little ground in the team competition, though it might not matter with the depth Denison has. The Owls went 3:39.28 to win the race for the second straight year, with the squad of Olivia Smith, Jennah Fadely, Anna Axas and Alexandra White. Fadely’s 59.78 on breaststroke made a huge difference, the only sub-minute swim of the A final.

Emory was a distant second in 3:41.15 with MIT third. Denison was a rock solid fifth to take a lead of more than 80 points into Friday over both Emory and Kenyon.
