Mireia Belmonte Garcia Doubles With World-Best in 1500 Free

Mireia Belmonte Garcia stole the show at the Spain Open Spring Championships with a pair of victories, each in the top 10 in the world.

Garcia blasted the top time in the world in the women’s 1500-meter free with a 16:10.63. That time far surpassed the previous best of 16:24.56 set by Leonie Beck.  Jimena Perez placed second tonight in 16:22.64 for second in the world as well, while Maria Vilas Vidal took third in 16:29.15.

Garcia doubled up by turning in a swift time of 2:12.80 to win the women’s 200-meter IM.  That effort moved her up to ninth in the world rankings.  Zeynep Gunes touched second overall in 2:14.14 with Beatriz Gomez taking third in 2:14.27.

Marc Sanchez Torrens claimed the men’s 800-meter free title in 7:54.02 to move to second in the world.  Pal Joensen owns the top time in the world this year with a 7:52.82 from the Danish Open this week.  Ricardo Rodriguez took second in 8:06.88 with Marcos Rodriguez finishing second in 8:08.08.

Marco Orsi became just the fourth man under 49 seconds this year in the men’s 100-meter free.  Orsi clocked a 48.98 for the win, moving to fourth in the world behind James Magnussen (48.43), Cameron McEvoy (48.76) and Mehdy Metella (48.85).  Konrad Czerniak joined Orsi under 49 with a fifth-ranked time of 48.99, while Andrey Grechin clocked a third-place effort of 49.15.

Martin Melconian won the men’s 50-meter breast in 28.12 after moving to seventh in the world rankings with a 27.85 in prelims.  Ivano Pizzolla finished second in 28.47 with Hector Monteaguido snaring third in 28.53.

Alexis Santos topped the men’s 200-meter IM in 2:00.51. That swim moved him up to 10th in the world rankings. Albert Puig, who already clocked a 2:00.54 in prelims, wound up second tonight in 2:00.73.  Alan Cabello took third overall in 2:01.49.

Aliaksandra Herasimenia claimed the women’s 100-meter free crown in 55.61 after posting a 55.60 in prelims.  Alice Mizzau placed second in 55.70 with Marta Gonzalez taking third place in 55.98.

Zeynep Gunes took the women’s 50-meter breast title in 31.40 with Jessica Vall Montero earning second in 31.69.  Alina Zmushka placed third in 31.77.
