This year she didn’t need a tie to win. Louisville junior Mallory Comerford successfully defended her 200 free title she tied with Stanford’s Katie Ledecky. Comerford also became only the second swimmer to break 1:40 in the 200 free as she swam a 1:39.80.

Comerford sits second all-time behind Missy Franklin who swam a 1:39.10 in 2015. Franklin is also the last person to successfully defend the 200 free title.

Comerford had pressure early on from Siobhan Haughey of Michigan and Simone Manuel of Stanford as Haughey was second at 1:40.69 and Manuel was third at 1:41.48.

Stanford’s Katie Drabot (1:43.20), Cal’s Robin Neummann (1:43.54), Texas A&M’s Claire Rasmus (1:43.65), Virginia’s Megan Moroney (1:44.20) and Cal’s Katie McLaughlin (1:44.32) also competed in the championship final.

This was McLaughlin’s second A-final of the night as she was sixth in the 100 fly just one event prior.

This is Louisville’s second straight NCAA title in the event and is the second Louisville women’s swimmer to win an individual event at NCAA’s after Kelsi Worrell won four titles in the 100 and 200 fly.
