Felipe Silva Clears 1:00 In 100 Breast, Katinka Hosszu Wins 200 Fly At Maria Lenk Trophy

SAO PAULO, Brazil, April 24. FELIPE Silva dipped under 1:00 in the men’s 100 breast for the first time this year, while Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu dominated the women’s 200 fly to highlight the fourth night of finals at the Maria Lenk Trophy in Brazil.

Leonardo De Deus took home the first title up for grabs tonight, winning the men’s 200 fly in 1:56.21, more than three and a half seconds faster than his prelim time. He’s now ranked fourth in the world behind South Africa’s Chad Le Clos and Japan’s Daiya Seto and Kenta Hrai. Luiz Melo also broke 2:00, posting a 1:59.27 to take second. Matheus Isidro claimed third with a 2:00.14. Meanwhile, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu dominated the women’s 200 fly event, winning by more than seven seconds in 2:08.22, which beat her season best of 2:08.47 from the Arena Grand Prix in Orlando in February. Giovanna Tomanik touched second in 2:15.63, while Gabriela Rocha rounded out the top three in 2:15.81.

In the men’s 100 breast, Felipe Silva cracked a minute for the first time in 2014, touching in 59.91 to move to fifth internationally. Joao Junior and Raphael Rodrigues battled it out for second, with Junior coming out on top, 1:00.40 to 1:00.69. Julia Sebastian topped the women’s 100 breast in 1:09.17, comfortably in front of Pamela Souza’s 1:10.40. Beatriz Travalon touched third in 1:10.94.

The men’s 50 back final turned out to be the closest of the evening, as Guilherme Guido held on to win by .06 over Fabio Santi, 25.41 to 25.47. Leonardo Guedes finished right behind the pair in 25.60. Etiene Medeiros had a much larger cushion in the women’s sprint backstroke, as her 28.41 came in well ahead of Natalia De Luccas’ 29.21. Natalia Diniz also broke 30 in the final with a third place effort of 29.47.

Miguel Valente wrapped up the night with a solid swim in the men’s 800 free. Valente cruised to an 8:01.41, with Juan Pereyra in second (8:05.36) and Marcos Ferrari (8:06.17) in third. Valente’s time ranks 21^st in the world for 2014.
