RIO DE JANEIRO – Bruno Fratus continued his strong meet at Brazilian Nationals with a season-best 50-meter free.

Fratus, who had already clocked a 21.44 at Pan Pacs to rank third in the 50 free, won the splash-and-dash tonight with a 21.41.  That’s just behind Florent Manaudou (21.32) and Cesar Cielo (21.39) this year.

Cielo, ranked second in the world with a 21.39 from the Maria Lenk Trophy meet, already turned in a 21.60 as a relay leadoff to set himself up well for a Worlds roster spot.

Cielo decided before the meet to gain his World qualifying times as a relay leadoff for his squad, and scratch the individual 50 and 100 freestyle events.

Nicholas Dos Santos finished second in 22.17, off his preliminary 22.15, while Italo Duarte took third in 22.25.

Etiene Medeiros, the recent world-record setter in the 50 back, moved to 17th in the world rankings in the women’s 50-meter free with a 24.74.  Graciele Hermann touched second in 24.87 with Lorrane Cristina winding up third in 25.36.

Felipe Franca topped the men’s 100-meter breast in 1:00.43 with Joao Gomes Jr. finishing second in 1:00.86.  Felipe Lima claimed third in 1:01.10.

Beatriz Azzolini hit the wall in 1:09.49 for the women’s 100-meter breast title, while Jhennifer Conceicao placed second in 1:09.56.  Renata Sander posted a third-place 1:10.84.

Manuella Lyrio topped the women’s 200-meter fly in 2:14.54 with Yana Medeiros earning second in 2:15.04.  Julia Benvenutti wound up third in 2:16.20.

Far be it from me to tell the world record-holder in the sprints what to and what not to swim — and when.

But he scratched the 50 finals, didn’t swim the 100…maybe knee(s) still sore?

Well Kazan’s still seven months away so presumably Scott Goodrich’ll see to it he’s in peak form come the World Championships.
