Wang Shun Captures 400 IM as Chinese Nationals Fill Racing Void

At a time when many fans of the sport are eager to see some first-class performance in the long-course pool, the Chinese National Championships have gotten the job done. The competition being held in Qingdao continued to produce several strong efforts on Monday, with Olympic medalist Wang Shun leading the way.

An Olympic and World Championships medalist in the 200 individual medley, Wang impressed in the 400 medley by winning that event comfortably in 4:11.89. That outing is a good sign for Wang, who was the bronze medalist in the 200 I.M. at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, and who has that event still to come at the Chinese Nationals. Wang was the short-course world champ in the 200 medley in 2018.

In the women’s 100 freestyle, gold went to Yang Junxuan, who covered her two laps in 53.57. Unable to replicate the speed she showed during the prelims, when she set a national record of 52.90, Zhang Yufei posted a second-place time of 53.59. The men’s 200 freestyle went to Ji Xinjie in 1:47.42, giving Ji another victory to complement his earlier meet triumph in the 400 freestyle.

In other action, Yan Yuxiang bested the field in the men’s 200 butterfly in 2:00.18.
