Lee Michaud Named President of USA Diving

USA Diving named former All-American diver Lee Michaud as its president Tuesday.

Michaud was a diver at the University of Michigan from 1986-89, earning All-American honors his last three seasons. He has worked the last eight years for Daseke, Inc., a transportation company for which he helped grow revenue and expand the business.

“I feel like I’m coming home,” Michaud said in a USA Diving statement. “I look forward to working closely with our staff in support of our athletes, members, clubs and overall community to grow the sport of diving and prepare for the Tokyo Games. I am excited to lead this capable team and am committed to fostering a community in which our divers can safely compete at the highest level.”

Michaud began diving at age 10. He was a five-time member of the national team and a multi-time national champion. He graduated from Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. His daughter, Alyssa, played water polo at Michigan.

“Our entire Board and organization enthusiastically welcome Lee Michaud as our new President,” USA Diving chairman Dave Gascon said. “His passion and ambition for the future of USA Diving and our sport is inspiring. He also brings the proven leadership, analytical skills and deep understanding of the sport that is needed to elevate USA Diving and to support our athletes, members and the greater diving community in the U.S.”

USA Diving has undergone numerous changes in recent years. CEO Terry Bassett resigned in February. Bassett replaced Lee Walsi Johnson, whose tenure began in May 2017 and lasted just 18 months.

Lee Michaud posted a letter to USA Diving members Tuesday that read in part:

“I know that I am coming to USA Diving at a challenging time for our organization and for the world around us. I am confident that, together, we can navigate these challenges and come out the other side better and stronger. It is my hope and vision that together, we can re-energize the diving community throughout the U.S. and restore USA Diving to its former prominence.”
