At USA Swimming’s International Relations Committee (IRC) meeting on Friday, the committee recommended that the organization work with representatives of FINA and the Unites States Olympic Committee (USOC) to look into the possibility of a back-up venue for the Open Water 10K race at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, providing the primary venue would not be suitable to hold the competition.

In a motion that passed unanimously, a two-pronged approach was approved, where FINA Vice President Dale Neuberger will work with FINA and USA Swimming staff will work with the USOC.

Water quality tests are being conducted regularly and released every 2-4 weeks. Thus far, the bacterial levels in Copacabana Bay, where the Open Water competition will be held, have been within World Health Organization standards.
