Top 9 Olympic Upsets: #9 Iron Mike

Beginning with this issue and running through July 2016—a month before the start of the Olympic swimming events in Rio on Aug. 6—Swimming World Magazine will bring you its top 9 upsets in the individual events in Olympic history—in particular, in the last 50 years.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Mike Burton stepped up to the lane 5 block to swim and compete in the 1500-meter freestyle. Prior to 1972, no athlete had won the 1500 free at two consecutive Olympic Games, but when “Iron Mike” stepped on to that block he would not only draw attention away from the young favorites, but also become the first man to win the 1500 free in two consecutive Olympic Games and lower the World Record in the event a record five times.

To learn more about “Iron Mike” and the 1972 1500-meter free upset, check out the November issue of Swimming World Magazine!
