Penn State Behrend Swimming Closes Out Baldwin Wallace

BEREA – Penn State Behrend swimming collected a pair of victories against Baldwin Wallace.  The men won 127-61, while the women claimed a 115-105 decision.

The Penn State Behrend men’s swimming and diving team recorded its second-straight dual-meet victory, posting a 127-61 win over Baldwin Wallace in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions won all but one event, starting with the 400 medley relay. Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford), Victor Nguyen (San Jose, Ca/Evergreen Valley), Nick Roth (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) and Ty Elder (Brentwood, CA/Heritage) won with a time of 3:42.15.

They finished before Behrend’s second group of Nick Kost (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge), Eric Matteson (Corry, PA/Corry), Jake Ekas (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Matt Myers (Cranberry Township, PA/Moon) in second place (3:53.71).

In the 200 free, Ryan Siggins (Erie, PA/Iroquois) won convincingly with a time of 1:54.51 while Shannon Steves (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) was third in 2:08.75.

Simon posted his individual win in the 50 freestyle (22.11), while Kost had a five second lead in the 400 IM for first place (4:25.88).

Ryan Mitcheltree (Moon Township, PA/Moon), who took second in the 1650 free, mustered up energy to win the 100 butterfly in 58.31 and Scott Romanko (Plum, PA/Plum) took second in 59.20.

Elder and Ekas posted the next two individual wins for Behrend. Elder was victorious in the 100 free (50.91) and Ekas followed that in the 100 backstroke for first in 56.01.

In the 500 free, Roth paced the Lions with a time of 5:09.90 for first out of five swimmers. The final win came from Nguyen in the 100 breaststroke. The junior touched in 1:01.43 to narrowly edge Tyler Thompson from BW in second (1:01.76).

The 400 freestyle relay consisting of Gwendolyn Lowery (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), Lauren Rosato (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley), Allie Schneider (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Mia Pietropola (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) won the final event in 3:56.09, nearly five seconds faster than second for 11 points to give them the edge over the Yellow Jackets.

The Lions finished the meet with a win and opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay. Lowery, Pietropola, Kristin Owens (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Emma Daghir (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Catholic) posted a time of 4:23.35 for first place.

Owens, Lowery, and Pietropola went on to win individual races for Behrend. Lowery touched first in the 200 freestyle (2:03.81), while Owens won the 400 IM (5:17.29) and Pietropola was the winner in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.66). Owens also took second in the 100 butterfly, but was first on the team with a time of 1:10.97.

Daghir tallied two second-place finishes on the day. She paced the Lions in the 100 freestyle (58.18) and then was behind Pietropola in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.31.

Anna Rose Watterson (Baldwin, PA/Seton-La Salle) finished second in the 1650 freestyle, before earning runner up in the 500 freestyle (5:51.32).

In the 50 free, Schneider had the top Behrend time in 28.30 for second place. Alex Isaacson (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) earned points in the 400 IM behind Owens for second place (5:27.66).

In both one-meter diving events, Rachel Cotton (Media, PA/Penncrest) registered a score of 154.15 and 182.30 the second time to win the pair.

The Yellow Jackets men’s swimming team opened the home portion of its schedule against visiting Penn State Behrend (Pa.) University in the BW Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

The BW men (2-4) lost to Penn State Behrend, 127-61. The men’s team had one individual winner and five runner-up finishes. Sophomore All-OAC swimmer Jacob Burk (Bowling Green) led the way with one individual win. Senior Bryan Gerber (Sagamore Hills/ Nordonia) and freshman Tyler Thompson (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) both had two runner-up finishes. Junior Justin Allison (Napoleon) also had a second place finish.

Burk won the 1650-yard freestyle with a final time of 17:33.89. Gerber finished runner up with a season best time in the men’s 400-yard individual medley with an impressive finish of 4:30.48 and in the 500-yard freestyle he had a wall touch of 5:16.83. Thompson placed second in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.76 and the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.38.

The women’s team had five individual winners and two runner-up finishes. BW was led by freshman, Jordyn Miller(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and junior All-Academic OAC and All- OAC Swimmer, Chandler Ashbaugh (Napoleon).

Miller finished first in two events including the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:10.91 and the 100-yard freestyle in 57:65.0. Ashbaugh finished first in the 100-yard fly with a time of 1:03.55 and a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a wall touch of 2:04.94.

Also swimming strongly for the Yellow Jackets with first place finishes were sophomore Carly Croyle (Avon) in the 100-yard backstroke with a final time of 1:08.64, and senior All-OAC swimmer, Kayla Eyster in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:41.60.
