ROCHESTER, Michigan, October 10. Oakland’s Greg Kampe and Pete Hovland are nominees for the 2015 Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, announced on Friday afternoon. Kampe enters his 31st season as head men’s basketball coach, while Hovland begins his 36th season at Oakland, coaching both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

Kampe is the third-longest tenured basketball coach at one school in Division I, behind Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim (38 seasons) and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (34 seasons). Named national coach of the year in 2000, Kampe’s teams won six Summit League championships in 15 seasons of competition, and he ranks No. 21 among active Div. I coaches with 519 victories. The Golden Grizzlies posted a nation’s best league record of 34-2 over two seasons (2009-11).

Hovland has never lost a conference championship as head swim coach. Oakland has won 36 consecutive men’s swimming championships, 30 under Hovland’s direction. Hovland led the men’s team to four consecutive national championships (1994-97) before making the transition to Division I, and is a six-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. On the women’s side, Hovland has guided Oakland to 13 consecutive league titles in the Div. I era, including Horizon League titles in both men and women in the first year of competition (2013-14).

Joining Kampe and Hovland on the nominee list are headliners Derek Jeter (New York Yankees), Sergei Federov (Detroit Red Wings) and current Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. There are a total of 31 nominees and were selected by an esteemed Super Committee comprised of Michigan Sports Hall of Fame members, sports executives and journalists who average over 35 years of experience.

Voting for the final inductees now begins, with ballots cast by a larger collection of Hall members, sports executives, administrators and media. The public is also eligible to vote in the Professional and College/Amateur categories now through Monday, October 20, on the Hall’s website here.

The 2015 Class, the Hall’s 59th, will be inducted in a formal radio-broadcast ceremony next February, with the exact date and venue to be announced, along with the inductees’ names, on Oct. 28.
