Penn State’s Ally McHugh posted one of the best times in the nation we have seen with a 15:43.34 to break the meet record held by Michigan’s G Ryan (15:44.93). This is Penn State’s first Big Ten victory in the 1650 since 1994 when Regan Stacey won the title for the Nittany Lions. It is also Penn State’s first Big Ten title since 2014.

She led a very fast field as Michigan’s Rose Bi finished in second at 15:51.18 and Ohio State’s Molly Kowal had a monster back half to finish in third at 15:53.11.

Michigan’s Sierra Schmidt (15:54.39), Indiana’s Cassy Jernberg (15:54.41), Michigan’s G Ryan (15:59.72), Purdue’s Kaersten Meitz (16:02.02) and Rutgers’ Sveva Schiazzano (16:11.92) swam in perhaps the fastest field in Big Ten history.

200 Back

Wisconsin sophomore Beata Nelson won her second event of the weekend with a 1:49.59 to break the Big Ten meet record that was her own at 1:50.46. Nelson set that record this morning in prelims and went almost a full second faster. Michigan senior Clara Smiddy came in second place at 1:50.63 and Indiana’s Kennedy Goss was third at 1:51.66.

Smiddy was the 2016 champion and Goss was the 2017 champion, and Nelson beat both of them for the crown in 2018. Nelson is Wisconsin’s first Big Ten champion in the 200 back since Maggie Meyer won in 2011. The Badgers also had two other swimmers in the field with Kathleen Coughlin (1:54.03) getting fifth and Jess Unicomb (1:54.73) getting sixth.

Ohio State’s Kristen Romano (1:53.34), Minnesota’s Tevyn Waddell (1:54.84) and Michigan’s Jacqueline Schafer (1:55.03) also swam in the championship final.

Indiana is now currently in second place with 887 points ahead of Minnesota (834) and Ohio State (817).

100 Free

In one of the most hyped races of the meet, Ohio State’s Liz Li won her third event of the meet with a 47.43 in the 100 free final. Li held off Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey at 47.54. Li won the 50 and Haughey won the 200 so the two clashed in between in the 100 on Saturday night but it was Li who won the final in her home pool for a new Big Ten meet record. Michigan’s Gabby DeLoof (48.01) finished in third place.

Li successfully defends her title from last year.

Michigan got major points with four total finalists. Catie DeLoof (48.30) and Daria Pyshnenko (48.70) finished in fourth and sixth for the Wolverines.

Zoe Avestruz (48.61), Macie McNichols (48.89) and Marissa Berg (48.95) also swam in the championship final.

    Suprised

Elizabeth Nelson had a stellar meet, she deserves recognition for that. A little shocked that she won the swimmer of the meet over Liz Li however. I believe Liz was the only person the win all 3 events? I wonder how they decided this award.

I was there. I do’nt want to take anything away from any of the other great swimmers and swims I saw, but Liz Li was the most dominant swimmer in the meet. Many spectators were asking as they were walking out of the meet why she was overlooked for that award.
