AUSTIN – Katie Ledecky claimed her third victory of the meet already at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin. Meanwhile, California’s Farida Osman lowered the boom on her Egyptian record in the women’s 50-meter free.
Women’s 400 IM
Arena Pro Swim Series points leader Elizabeth Beisel turned in a phenomenal breaststroke leg to overtake favorite Katinka Hosszu down the stretch for the 400-meter IM win.
Beisel hit the wall in 4:36.71 for the win, which would have placed her just outside the top 10 in the world last year. She finished last year with a fourth-ranked season best of 4:31.99 at Pan Pacs.
California’s Caitlin Leverenz, just more than a week out from getting married, checked in with a silver-winning time of 4:38.35 as she also had a strong breaststroke leg.
Hosszu, who initially led throughout the front half, fell apart in the breaststroke leg and couldn’t recover as she settled for bronze in 4:39.93.

Men’s 400 IM
California’s Josh Prenot followed a similar plan as Elizabeth Beisel as Prenot’s dominant breaststroke told the tale in the men’s 400-meter IM.
Prenot threw down a 35.81 split to gain his second victory of the meet with a 4:16.08 after taking down the 200-meter breast last night. That’s Prenot’s best in-season time ever, clearing his previous top time of 4:18.32 from the Mare Nostrum series last summer.
SwimMAC’s Tyler Clary and Ryan Lochte rounded out the top three as Clary turned in a 4:16.28 to finish just behind Prenot.
Lochte, however, claimed third in 4:18.68 with NCAP 18-year-old Andrew Seliskar finishing fourth in 4:21.41.

Women’s 200 free
Swimming World’s World Swimmer of the Year Katie Ledecky tracked down her third gold medal of the meet with an easy-speed victory in the 200-meter free.
Ledecky hit the wall in 1:56.16, just a second off her scorching time of 1:55.16 from last year at Nationals. She nearly cleared her in-season best of 1:55.79 from the 2014 PV Senior Championships last July.
NYAC’s Megan Romano joined Ledecky under 2:00 with a second-place time of 1:58.99, while Mission Viejo’s Katie McLaughlin snagged third in 1:59.70.

Men’s 200 free
Conor Dwyer, who recently made the move from NBAC to the Trojan Swim Club, easily won the men’s 200-meter free in 1:47.76.
That time is less than a second off his in-season best of 1:47.01 from the 2013 Santa Clara Grand Prix stop, and is a nice January time for Dwyer to start off with.
Club Wolverine’s Bobby Hurley blazed his way to a second-place time of 1:49.59 with Dion Dreesens claiming third in 1:50.04.

Women’s 200 back
In one of the most exciting races of the meet so far, Oakville’s Dominique Bouchard used her patented closing speed to overtake a loaded field in the women’s 200-meter back.
Bouchard hit the wall in 2:10.02 as she clipped Bluefish’s Elizabeth Beisel. Beisel powered her way to second in 2:10.09 as she needed to put up some huge speed in the final 50 meters. That’s good enough for some more valuable series points.
Taylor Ruck, the 14-year-old Canadian who trains at Scottsdale Aquatics, had a big lead at the 150 with a 1:36.92, but wound up settling for a huge personal best time of 2:10.22. Coming into this meet, her previous best had been a 2:13.05 at the 2014 Summer Junior Nationals. Tonight’s swim would have put her just outside the top 20 in the world last year.
Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu showed some wear and tear from a heavy schedule the past few months as she faded to sixth in 2:12.70.

Men’s 200 back
California’s Ryan Murphy held off a hard charging Matt Grevers of Tucson Ford for the men’s 200-meter back victory.
Murphy hit the wall in 1:56.91 for the win, just a bit more than a second off his seventh-ranked season best of 1:55.73 from a last year. That bodes well for the coming season.
Grevers, meanwhile, tracked down silver with a time of 1:57.43 as he closed in 29.57 to lock down runner-up tonight.
Murphy’s Cal teammate Jacob Pebley picked up third-place honors in the finale with a time of 1:58.47. Texas’ Jack Conger also cleared 2:00 with a fourth-place 1:59.94.
