Darian Townsend, Mark Jurek and Keaton Blovad Pick Up Second Wins at Austin Sectionals

AUSTIN – Keaton Blovad, Darian Townsend and Mark Jurek each won their second individual events of the meet to highlight the third night of racing at the Austin Sectionals meet at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Tualatin Hills’ Keaton Blovad continued her outstanding meet with her second individual win of the meet in the women’s 200 free final. Blovad dropped just over two seconds from her prelim swim to win in 1:46.65, comfortably ahead of her teammate Sara Metzsch, who touched at 1:48.40. Scottsdale’s Victoria Toris also slipped in under 1:49 in finals with a 1:48.96.

Scottsdale’s Darian Townsend earned his second win of the meet in the men’s 200 free, clocking a 1:35.41 to add to his victory in the 100 last night. Tualatin Hills’ Patrick Mulcare gave Townsend all he could handle and led going into the final 50 before fading to second with a 1:36.54. Arizona Gold’s Ben Olszewski rounded out the top three in 1:39.67. Notably, Tualatin Hills’ Liam Metzsch posted the third fastest time in finals, finishing ninth in 1:39.60.

Cassidy Stein of the DU Hilltoppers took command of the women’s 400 IM on the backstroke leg and never looked back, holding off a hard-charging Kelly Huffer of Scottsdale to win the race, 4:18.51 to 4:18.66. Brittney Beetcher of Boulder Swimming also got under 4:20 in the final heat with a 4:19.75 for third.

After setting a new sectional record in the 200 fly last night, Arizona Gold’s Mark Jurek returned to the pool to capture his second win of the meet with a 3:48.32 in the men’s 400 IM. Phoenix Swim Club’s Matthew Anderson swam a 3:51.87 to finish second, while Cheyenne Mountain’s Daniel Carr dropped nearly six seconds from prelims to take third in 3:53.36.

The Tualatin Hills foursome of Keaton Blovad, Emily Cook, Lisa Kaunitz and Sara Metzsch flew by Scottsdale’s Victoria Toris, Samantha Fazio, Gabriella Fagan and Emma Segneri to win the 200 free relay, 1:32.92 to 1:33.52. Denver Swim Academy’s Amy Lenderink, Taylor Wilson, Lindsay Painton and Ann Ochitwa claimed third in 1:33.67.

With all four swimmers under 21 seconds, Phoenix Swim Club had enough firepower to capture the men’s 200 free relay win with Grady Ottomeyer, Calvin Higgins, John Morgan and Matthew Anderson stopping the clock at 1:22.86. Tualatin Hills claimed second in 1:23.43, thanks to Patrick Mulcare, Liam Metzsch, Anthony Nosack and Evan Carlson. Scottsdale’s Jack Blake, David Brown, Thomas Ottman and Carl Mickelson rounded out the top three in 1:24.08.

Scottsdale leads the women’s team race with 383 points after day three, with Tualatin Hills (336) and Denver Swim Academy (220) in second and third. Arizona Gold continues to lead the men’s team standings with 319 points. Tualatin Hills (252) and Scottsdale (239) are second and third.
