Russia’s Anton Chupkov cruised to the top seed in the men’s 100-meter breast finals at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.
After setting a World Junior record in prelims with a sizzling 1:00.12 to move to 20th in the world rankings, Chupkov checked in with a 1:00.34 for the top seed heading into tomorrow’s finals.
USA’s Michael Andrew, in his second swim of the night, nearly broke his 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record of 1:00.68 with a second-ranked swim of 1:00.78.
Lithuania’s Andrius Sidlauskas qualified third overall in 1:00.83 as the only other sub-1:01 of the night.
Along with Carsten Vissering (1:00.86), the top three are among just four 18-and-unders to have broken 1:01 this year.
USA’s Reece Whitley claimed the fourth seed in 1:01.52 with Australia’s Matthew Wilson snaring fifth in 1:01.81.
Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi (1:01.95), Great Britain’s Charlie Attwood (1:01.96) and Belgium’s Basten Caerts (1:01.99) also grabbed transfer spots into the championship heat.
