Pawel Korzeniowski Cracks Top 5 in World in 200 Fly at Polish Nats

OLSZTYN, Poland, June 5. PAWEL Korzeniowski, the 2005 world champion in the men’s 200-meter fly, still has it as he just proved at the Polish Nationals in Olsztyn. Korzeniowski cracked the top five in the SwimVortex world rankings in the event on day one in Poland.

Korzeniowski powered his way to a 1:55.60 in the event to move to fourth in the world. Only Chad Le Clos (1:54.56), Daiya Seto (1:54.82) and Kenta Hirai (1:55.27) have been faster. Korzeniowski will be looking for his fourth gold medal in the 200 fly at the European Championships later this year in Berlin. He already won the event in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Marcin Opalski took second in the event in 1:58.78 with Michal Poprawa finishing third in 1:59.65.

Meanwhile, Pulawy’s Konrad Czerniak demonstrated some world-class speed in the men’s 50-meter free with a blistering 21.94. On top of qualifying for the European Championships, he moved to 11th in the world with the swim, just behind the top 10 currently anchored by Shinri Shioura’s 21.88 from Japanese Nationals. Lodz’ Filip Wypych took second in 22.51 with Jan Holub earning third in 22.55.

Alicja Tchorz, who had been turning in Katinka Hosszuesque multi-event performances in earlier season events in Poland this year, blazed her way to just outside the top 20 in the world in the women’s 200-meter back with a 2:10.34. Agata Magner (2:15.70) and Ludwika Szynal (2:17.17) rounded out the top three.

In other action, Joanna Zachoszcz led the way in the women’s 800-meter freestyle with an 8:45.11, while Olsztyn training partner Manuela Wikiel touched second in 8:48.99. Ostrowiec’s Donata Kilijanska finished third in 8:50.39.

Oswiecim’s Wojciech Wojdak clinched a spot on the European Championships roster with a 15:09.97 to win the men’s 1500-meter free. Szczecin’s Pawel Furtek also cleared the European Champs cut with a second-place 15:15.10. His training partner Mateusz Sawrymowicz, the 2007 world champion in the event, wound up third in 15:21.19, a few seconds off the continental cut.

Warszawa’s Mirella Olczak clipped Wroclaw’s Klaudia Nazieblo, 2:12.63 to 2:12.87, in the women’s 200-meter fly. She had to throw down a 34.25 final 50 to catch Nazieblo, but she had enough time to make up the difference. Warszawa’s Paulina Sikora placed third in the event with a 2:13.15.

Lodz’ Aleksandra Urbanczyk topped the women’s 50-meter free with a 25.45, while Slask Wroclaw teammates Anna Dowgiert (25.84) and Nikola Petryka (25.96) touched second and third. Krakow’s Matuesz Wysoczynski won the men’s 200-meter back in 2:00.13 with Warszawa’s Krzysztof Morawski finishing second in 2:00.36. Skiemiewice’s Krzysztof Jankiewicz wound up third in 2:02.47.
