UCLA Breaks Three Pool Records In Win At Washington State

PULLMAN, Washington, January 17. UCLA set two pool records in the 400 medley relay and 200 free relay, while Lauren Baker took down the pool mark in the 1000 free as UCLA topped Pac-12 conference opponent Washington State 133-67 on Friday night in Pullman. The Cougars will have a second opportunity to get a win tomorrow as the two schools will hold a second dual meet on Saturday.

The 16th-ranked Bruins had the best times in 10 of Friday’s 11 races and set three Gibb Pool records in a 133-67 victory at Washington State.

Sophomore Katie Kinnear won a pair of races, while the Bruins also claimed both relays. Also recording best event times on the night were seniors Lauren Baker, Ting Quah and Anna Senko, sophomore Katy Campbell and freshmen Ashley Tse and Madison White.

The meet began with a Bruin victory in the 400 Medley Relay. White, juniors Jessica Khojasteh and Noelle Tarazona and Quah set the Gibb Pool record with a 3:46.85, and were followed by the Bruin B team of Tse, freshman Brigitte Winkler, Senko and junior Monica Dornick.

Baker made it back-to-back pool records for the Bruins in the 1000 Freestyle with a season-best time of 9:56.02, with Campbell finishing second. Senko was tops in the 200 Free (1:52.00), leading a 1-2-3 finish with freshman Linnea Mack and junior Ally Loper.

Washington State picked up its lone meet victory with a win in the 50 Free. Senior Kathryn Murphy (24.30) posted the best Bruin time in finishing second. Kinnear earned her first win of the night after swimming a 2:05.15 in the 200 Individual Medley. Tarazona was second, followed by Tse and sophomore Arlyn Upshaw.

Quah posted her team-best 11th dual meet victory of the season with a 2:04.14 in the 200 Butterfly, with Baker finishing third. In the 100 Free, White was first (52.46), with junior Taylor Carlson placing third.

Kinnear recorded her second win of the evening in the 200 Backstroke with a 2:01.80, while senior Jesse Bergman earned the second-best time in the event. Campbell finished first in the 500 Free (5:01.20), with Dornick posting the second-best mark. In the 200 Breaststroke, Tse claimed victory with a 2:19.50, as Khojasteh had the third-best time.

The Bruins notched their third pool record of the evening in the last race, the 200 Free Relay. The quartet of Mack, Quah, Murphy and Dornick had a time of 1:33.75.

UCLA, which is now 7-1 in dual meets this season, swims against Washington State (2-4) again on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Washington State swimming team fell to UCLA with a final score of 133-67 Friday in the first of two dual meets between the conference opponents.

Ali Mand highlighted the competition for the Cougars by notching a first-place finish in the 50 free. She completed the race with a time of 24.25 seconds. Washington State freshman Haley Rose Love finished third in the same event with a time of 24.38 seconds.

Elise Locke, Emma Johansson, Loree Olson, Emma Ronczkowski, and Presley Wetterstrom each tabbed second-place finishes in respective individual events for the Cougars.

To round out the night, the relay team of Johansson, Mand, Love, and Anne Kenney placed second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.17.

“Our kids raced tough and never threw in the towel, and that’s what we were looking for,” Washington State Head Coach Tom Jager said. “We are going to get better from this and I like it. This is actually what we need. We need to keep on being pushed, we need to keep on being challenged, and it’s just going to make our team hungry.”

The Bruins opened and closed Friday’s meet by breaking Gibb Pool records in both relay events. In the 400 medley relay, Madison White, Jessica Khojasteh, Noelle Tarazona, and Ting Quah broke the pool record with a time of 3:46.85. In the 200 free relay, UCLA’s Linnea Mack, Quah, Kathryn Murphy, and Monica Dornick tabbed a time of1:33.75, also a Gibb Pool record.

Individually for UCLA, Lauren Baker finished the 1000 free with a time of 9:56.02, breaking the previous Gibb Pool record by 4.13 seconds

The Cougars will face off with the the Bruins once more Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gibb Pool.
