Fort Lauderdale Approves Construction Of New Facility; ISHOF Still On Property

At a recent meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Community Beach Redevelopment Advisory Board determined that they would use the remaining funds in the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to refurbish and replace the existing pools at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex. The construction would ensure that all pools on location are FINA compliant facilities.

The facility will feature two 50-meter pools and a diving well. One of the two pools will be refurbished, while the second will be newly constructed and feature an adjustable bulkhead. The diving well will also be newly constructed to meet new code requirements. Swimming World’s sources confirmed that the competition pool will have adequate seating for 1500 spectators and an additional 500 seats will be available at the diving well.

The new footprint, however, may encroach on the property now housing ISHOF, including the historic statue that greets all visitors.

In regards to ISHOF’s pending move to Santa Clara, CA there has been no mention of them cancelling the relocation. Even though ISHOF is still looking towards the future, they remain at location in Fort Lauderdale and are open to the public.

Swimming World is closely following this story as additional developments occur in the near future.

Whatever the outcome is for ISHOF it is always welcome news when there are new facilities being either refurbished or constructed. Fort Lauderdale has a long history of competitive swimming with a total of ten world records being set on site. Michael Phelps (400 IM, 4:11.09) and Natalie Coughlin (100 back, 59.58) kickstarted their long and successful careers with a duo of world records in 2002. The facility has been home to numerous national and regional championships as well. The facility has also been home to the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) winter training camp dating back to 1933.

I had the privilege to join Fort Lauderdale Swimming Team back on the 1980’s with coach Jack Nelson. Great times! Love that city! !!

This is great news…if it truly comes to pass. I will start believing when they break ground, and I will truly believe when they fill the new pools with water.

Loved the YMCA Nationals at the Hall of Fame Pool. It may be the greatest swim meet in the world. Great team spirit and competition. Maybe the meet will move back “home” when the pools are up and running. Thank you City of Fort Lauderdale!
