Siobhan Haughey Claims Golden Double & Anastasia Kirpichnikova Rattles 1500 Free Rankings At Mare Nostrum

Siobhan Haughey claimed a golden double and Anastasia Kirpichnikova rattled the 1500 free rankings as the Mare Nostrum tour got underway in Canet-en-Roussillon, France.

Haughey started her programme in the 100m breaststroke in which the first four home were separated by just 0.15.

The Hong Kong swimmer, who set a national record of 1:05.92 en-route to bronze at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, stopped the clock in 1:07.01.

Reona Aoki, the 2022 Asian Games champion, was next home in 1:07.09 with Great Britain’s Kara Hanlon taking third in 1:07.11, 0.05 ahead of Sweden’s Sophie Hansson (1:07.16).

Haughey returned for the penultimate event of the day where she enjoyed a clear victory in the 200 free in 1:55.39, her third-fastest of 2024 giving her three of the 10 swiftest this year.

The 26-year-old claimed her first global long-course title when she took the 200 free gold in 1:54.89 at the World Championships in Doha and will travel to Paris as an Olympic silver medallist and world champion.

Hungarian pair Lilla-Minna Abraham and Nikolett Padar were next home in 1:58.46 and 1:58.55.

Kirpichnikova Goes Fourth In Rankings; French Sprint Double

Kirpichnikova dominated the 1500 free to win by more than 15 seconds in 15:56.92 to go fourth in the 2024 rankings.

Only Katie Ledecky, with her 15:38.25 rankings topper from the Atlanta Classic earlier in May, and Simona Quadarella and Li Bingjie, who clocked 15:46.99 and 15:56.62 respectively en-route to gold and silver at the Doha worlds, have gone quicker than Kirpichnikova.

It was the second-fastest time of the Frenchwoman’s career, eclipsed only by her national record of 15:48.53 as she finished fourth at the 2023 World Championships, and her second trip inside 16 minutes.

Viktoria Mihalyvari (16:12.03) and Diana Duraes (16:25.78) were the next women home.

There was a French 50 freestyle double with Beryl Gastaldello taking the women’s title in 24.62 as she cut 0.20 from her previous best of 24.82 from the 2022 European Championships.

Milou van Wijk of the Netherlands was second in 25.02 with Marie Wattel edging French teammate Melanie Henique by the slimmest of margins in 25.02 to 25.03.

Maxime Grousset was the only man inside 22secs as he touched in 21.92 ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Dylan Carter (22.37) who edged out Ian Ho by 0.01 in 22.37 to 22.38.

Grousset returned for the 100 fly, the 2023 world champion finishing second in 51.92, 0.02 behind Genki Terakado who clocked 51.90.

Nyls Korstanje was third in 52.05.

Louise Hansson was the only swimmer inside 58 as she won the women’s race in 57.91 ahead of Sara Junevik who made it a Sweden 1-2 in 58.44 with Wattel claiming her second medal of the day with bronze in 58.71.

PB For Terebo; Jaouadi Takes 400 Free

The home crowd enjoyed victory by Emma Terebo who posted a 2:08.43 victory in the 200 back.

It was a PB for Terebo and her first trip inside 2:09 as she cut 0.65 from her previous best of 2:09.08 set at January’s Euro Meet in Luxembourg.

Her time was the joint ninth-fastest by a Frenchwoman with Laure Manaudou still atop the all-time domestic rankings with her national record of 2:06.64 that has stood since April 2008.

Dora Molnar (2:10.07) and Africa Zamorano (2:10.24) were second and third respectively.

Hidekazu Takehara of Japan won the men’s race in 1:58.37 ahead of French pair Antoine Herlem (1:58.94) and Yohann Ndoye Brouard (1:59.40).

Ahmed Jaouadi was a clear winner in the 400 free, the Tunisian the only man inside 3:50 in 3:48.62.

Tommy-Lee Camblong of France edged out Great Britain’s Tyler Melbourne-Smith in 3:52.19 to 3:52.26.

Anastasia Gorbenko enjoyed a clear victory in the women’s 200IM in 2:08.63 ahead of Japanese pair Shiho Matsumoto (2:10.33) and Yui Ohashi, the Olympic champion clocking 2:12.41.

There was a Japanese clean sweep of the podium in the men’s 100m breaststroke with Yu Hanaguruma the only man inside the minute mark in 59.76.

Ippei Watanabe (1:00.28) and Taku Taniguchi (1:00.77) joined their countryman on the rostrum.

Kylie Masse led home a swift women’s 50 back in 27.43 ahead of Analia Pigree (27.53) and Ingrid Wilm (27.71).

Adam Jaszo won the men’s race in 25.46 ahead of 2022 Commonwealth finalist Srihari Nataraj (25.50) and Scott Gibson (25.64).

Tomoyuki Matsushita won the men’s 400IM in 4:13.77
