Jen Buffin Promoted to Take Over Head Job at Colorado College

Jen Buffin has been promoted to the head coaching job at Colorado College, replacing long-time coach Anne Goodman James.

James announced her retirement in January, effective at the end of the season, after 18 years at CC and 48 as an NCAA head coach. In Buffin, the Tigers get a coach with experience in the program, internationally and as a head coach.

Buffin has been at CC since 2022, helping the Tigers set 19 school records. She has coached internationally with the Philippines national team, at the 2016 Olympics, 2015 World Championships and 2015 Southeast Asian Games.

“First, thank you to Lesley Irvine and the search committee for their support during this process,” Buffin said in a university statement. “I am excited to continue working with the staff and student athletes at Colorado College while leading the swimming and diving programs. I would also like to thank Anne Goodman James for the opportunity to work with her and the program over the last two years. I appreciate her support and look forward to maintaining the high standards she has set for the program. It is an exciting time to be a Tiger, I look forward to helping our swimmers and divers perform at the highest level and for our program to compete at the National level.”

Buffin was the head coach at Oregon State for three seasons, from 2016 until the program’s discontinuation in 2019. She was previously the associate head coach at the University of Hawaii for 10 seasons, where she worked with Philippine national teamer Jasmine Alkhaldi. Buffin graduated from San Jose State in 2002. She was an assistant coach at San Jose State from 2001-05, New Mexico State in 2019-20 and as a volunteer assistant at Air Force Academy in 2020-21.

“I am thrilled to have Jen join our team of outstanding coaches here at CC,” director of athletics Lesley Irvine said. “She has coached at the highest levels, has a passion for Colorado College and is excited to build on the traditions and foundation of success with the program. I am glad to see her move into this leadership opportunity.”
